Samsung refrigerators are everywhere in DFW. They're affordable, feature-packed, and stylish — but they have a few well-documented failure modes that we see weekly. If you own a Samsung French-door refrigerator (especially the RF28 series), here's what you need to know about the most common problems, what causes them, and what they cost to fix in Dallas.
1. Ice maker not making ice (most common)
This is by far the most common Samsung refrigerator problem we see in Dallas. The ice maker in French-door Samsung models (RF28, RF26, RF18 series) is known for failing — usually because of an ice buildup in the ice bucket that prevents the ejector arm from rotating. The fix is sometimes a forced defrost cycle, sometimes a replacement ice maker assembly.
Typical cost in DFW: $145–$240. Repair time: 30–45 minutes. If the issue is just ice buildup, we can sometimes walk you through the reset over our $30 video diagnosis — total cost $30.
2. Refrigerator not cooling but freezer works
This is the classic 'evaporator coil frozen solid' problem. The refrigerator side stops cooling because the evaporator coil has iced over, blocking airflow. Causes include a failed defrost thermostat, defrost heater, or main control board. You'll usually notice this when your milk is warm but your ice cream is still solid.
Typical cost in DFW: $220–$340. Repair time: 60–90 minutes. We carry the defrost thermostat and heater on every truck, so it's almost always a single-visit fix.
3. Water dispenser not working
Common causes: frozen water line in the door (especially in garages or cold climates — not typically a DFW issue but happens), failed water inlet valve, or clogged water filter. The water inlet valve is the most common culprit in DFW, where our hard water clogs the valve over time.
Typical cost in DFW: $145–$220. Repair time: 30–60 minutes. We recommend replacing the water filter at the same time if it's over 6 months old.
4. Compressor start relay failure
The compressor start relay is a small electrical component that tells the compressor when to kick on. When it fails, you'll hear a clicking sound every few minutes from the back of the refrigerator, but the compressor won't start. Your refrigerator will warm up over 24–48 hours.
Typical cost in DFW: $185–$260. Repair time: 45 minutes. This is one of the most affordable compressor-related repairs — the part itself is only $40–$80. We carry it on every truck.
5. Loud or noisy operation
Samsung refrigerators have a known issue with the evaporator fan motor becoming noisy — usually a whining or squealing sound from the freezer section. The fan motor bearings fail over time. Less commonly, the condenser fan motor (in the back near the compressor) can also fail.
Typical cost in DFW: $220–$310. Repair time: 45–75 minutes. The evaporator fan motor is $80–$140, and replacement requires removing the freezer interior panels.

Should I repair or replace my Samsung refrigerator?
Samsung refrigerators are generally worth repairing up to about 10 years of age. After that, the cumulative cost of common repairs (ice maker, defrost system, eventually compressor) starts approaching the cost of replacement. The exception: if your Samsung has a linear compressor, it may have a 10-year warranty on the compressor itself — check your warranty documentation before paying for any compressor-related repair.
