From one garage in East Dallas to 25 DFW cities
In 2013, Miguel Hernandez was running a one-truck appliance repair operation out of a converted garage on Commerce Street in East Dallas. He'd spent the previous decade as a senior technician for two national appliance repair chains, and he was tired of two things: techs being pressured to upsell customers on repairs they didn't need, and customers being charged $150 just to have someone show up at their door.
So he hung out a shingle — literally, a hand-painted wooden sign — with two rules. Rule one: upfront flat-rate pricing, every time, quoted before any work began. Rule two: the longest warranty in DFW. In 2013 that meant 180 days. By 2017, Miguel doubled it to 365 days — and the warranty refund rate stayed under 1.4%, because we just don't make the same repair twice.
The first three years were slow. Miguel answered the phone himself, drove the truck himself, and at night he'd sit at his kitchen table in Oak Cliff writing postcards to every new homeowner in the 75214 and 75206 ZIP codes. By 2015, the reviews had started to compound — 200 Google reviews at 4.9 stars brought enough calls to hire a second technician for Plano and Richardson.
In 2019, Miguel completed factory training with Sub-Zero Group, becoming one of only four certified Sub-Zero / Wolf service providers in DFW at the time. That certification opened the door to premium neighborhoods — Highland Park, University Park, Southlake, Westlake — where built-in Sub-Zero refrigerators and Wolf ranges are common and most repair shops won't touch them.
The pandemic in 2020 was a turning point. With customers nervous about in-home visits, Miguel launched a video diagnosis pilot — initially free, just to keep the business alive. The pilot showed something interesting: about 40% of issues could be diagnosed and sometimes fixed over video. By 2024, that pilot had become our $30 video diagnosis program — the first of its kind in DFW — and it's now used in about 35% of all our bookings.
In 2024, we launched the Dallas Appliance mobile app for iOS and Android. It's the only appliance repair app built specifically for DFW homeowners — real-time technician tracking, in-app $30 video diagnosis, secure payment, and a permanent appliance record with warranty tracking. Twelve years after Miguel painted that first wooden sign, we now have 18 certified technicians serving 25 DFW cities and 1,287 verified reviews at 4.9 stars. We're still family-owned. We still answer our own phones. And we still charge what we quote.
